Working with Alphas and Masks

With the new ZBrush 4R2b, Surface mode allows you to create fine details with your Alphas without changing the overall shape of your model. Making Alphas tileable just got easier, with the new Seamless setting you’ll be free from the typical constraints.

Applying this freshly made Alpha is easier than you think. You can accurately place this Alpha on a specific part of your model to create a mask using the transpose function. Transpose can also be used through the new TransPose Smart Masking Brush, to create a Mask based on the objects surface curvature. This is useful for accurately selecting large areas defined by the models borders or bevels. The Extend and Shrink commands, take masking capacity to a whole other level. You can increase and decrease the masked regions using these smart new functions.

Deforming the Model

To complement how the Deformation tools operate globally on the model or its non-masked areas, ZBrush 4R2b introduces the UnClip mode. This allows you to revert an action previously created using the Clip brush. For example, you can Clip a rounded surface to temporarily flatten it, sculpt details on this flattened surface and then UnClip it to restore the original rounded shape while retaining the newly added details!

TransPose has a new deformation trick too. Simply hold down the Alt key while moving the center circle on the Action Line. This makes it possible to dynamically bend, twist or skew your model.

For the first time ever, you can now export your renders directly from ZBrush in the JPEG file format.  A new exporter window launches, giving you enhanced control over features for cropping your render and making color adjustments while providing you with a preview in real-time.  You’ll also have an estimation of file size provided for you while you work.  ZBrush 4R2b eliminates the extra step of using another application to convert your renders to JPEG.

Topology Work

You can easily add an edge loop to your model with the new Edge Loop Mask Border feature. This adds a polygonal loop around the edge of your object’s current Mask. This is complimented by the ability to use the Slice Brush. This brush will let you slice from one side to the other side generating surface based edge loops.

Polygroup creation has also been drastically improved with a new Group Mask function. This simply adds a Polygroup to the existing Mask, and provides an alternative to the From Masking function introduced in ZBrush 4.

Workflow Enhancements

The added workflow enhancements made to ZBrush 4R2b, will continue to provide users with the most intuitive digital sculpting tool available.  The Mesh Extract feature now has a preview mode for the Mesh Extract action.  The refinement and control gained through this will no doubt eliminate the need to redo several steps helping to achieve the desired outcome quicker.

Perspective now uses the new Local Mode.  This makes zooming in tight on your models or even inside your models a breeze, all the while maintaining your perspective value.
