Francois Rimasson: 2D to 3D
By Ryan Kingslien in sculpting | 2 comments
Francois Rimasson recently posted a thread at ZBrushCentral that I missed. It shows a really cool workflow that we have experimented with before and shows some really interesting potential.
In this video, Francois performs the following steps:
- Paints a black shape on a 3D plane
- Selects the MRGBZ Grabber tool and grabs a section of the 3D plane
- In the Texture palette, press Texture: Make Alpha
- In the Alpha Palette, press Make 3D
- Select the new model in the Tool palette and then sculpt
Thanks for sharing Francois!

Hmm, that’s cool - is it possible to take a black / white image and use the alpha data to make the start of a 3D-ish model? You know, sort of a la Hans Solo in frozen mode. For example, would it be possible to import an image like this:

as some sort of image plane, get ZBrush to read the alpha data to form a mesh, and then sculpt from there?

Well, not in the way that you may immediately think. The better option is to think like a sculptor and build a maquette with either zspheres or a pre-existing model. We’ll have to get together and get you started on this!
