Rapid Head Sketch

rapid head sketch

As often as possible I keep to a routine of sculpting one head or object as soon as I get into the office. It keep me fresh with ZBrush and I always learn something.

After the last head sketching video some people requested a slower video of the process. So below is a recording of me sculpting in ZBrush using ZBrush’s Movie Recorder. ZBrush’s Movie Recorder does not speed up the recording but it does remove blank moments or areas where nothing is happening inside of ZBrush.

There is no audio to this file as it is not meant to be a complete tutorial. Instead, it just gives you an eye over my shoulder as I sculpt in ZBrush. To that end, I have simply uploaded it to YouTube.

Reference

In this video I use the following tools:

Some interesting notes from sculpting it:

Masking off the infra-orbital triangle as I do at 3:15 minutes into the sketch really helps me create the correct planes of the cheek and jaw.

The Clay brush is fantastic for helping me establish planes by either pushing in or pulling out.

The Move brush is the great “Do Over”! At 4.:19 minutes into the tutorial I check the eyes and realize they are not deep enough on the inside. A quick tug of the Move brush and things are back in order and ready to go again!

Sculpting hair is a matter of innuendo. Suggest, don’t tell. Hey, it works for fiction writers!

    Thanks for the inspiration. ^^
That is interesting making one head everyday, so how many of these heads have you got so far?

I think this is a great habit that I need to go into.

    Thanks again! :)

Also, thanks for not speeding up the video, but removing idle moments on the movie recorder still makes it seem to zoom so fast. Maybe you can use an external screen recorder instead next time?

very fun watching you sculpt :)
one request, could you use Veoh instead of youtube? (or both) cause you can get much better video Rez on Veoh and it would make seeing what you’re doing much easier.
    just a thought ;)

Bambi - Thanks for the kind words. :)

Peter - I tell you it gets a bit difficult to manage things once you start uploading in multiple places. For now, my hopes lie in YouTube increasing their quality. They have already taken steps in that direction.
