Human Anatomy Sculpting with Arran J Lewis
By Ryan Kingslien in ZSpheres, sculpting | 9 comments
In case you have missed it over the last few months, Arran J Lewis has put together a fantastic thread at ZBrushCentral showcasing his anatomy studies.
In this thread he sculpts the entire skeletal system and provides very detailed information regarding the nuances of the human figure.
His sculpting is very clear and does a great job of pointing out the important characteristics of everything from the foot, the hand, the spine and the rib cage.
Sculpting the Skeleton
To sculpt the skeleton, Arron started by creating a base mesh with ZSpheres.
To do this, Arran used several important ZSphere features.
One of them is the ability to separate your ZSphere chain into separate objects. This feature is also highlighted in the Geoff Priest’s Lessons from the Crypt here.
Another is the ability to use ZSphere Magnets to create edge loops.

Sculpting the Skull
To give you a sense of his progress let’s look at the skull.
The skull starts out as a ZSphere model in the upper-left of the image below. Then it progresses to the final model in the bottom right.
Then Arran moves on to painting the skull as in the image below.
The entire thread is filled with great examples of anatomical sculpting that will useful to any artist studying anatomy.

This is great work. It shows the structure need for every modeler in 3d. Great work Arran.

Excellent work! I am curious to find out what software you used to render it?
Ryan Kingslien | Feb 22, 2008 | Reply
Hey Suren, Arran use ZBrush for the rendering.

Hello,
My name is Demetrius; I want to ask you a question that may seem a little weird at first. Here Go’s!, I had a brother whom died in the 90’s. My mind has been on the facial expressions that he use to give us, when ever he was happy, sad, surprised, or even sick. I can’t seem to forget them nor do I really want to, so! I would like to know if it would be possible to have a sort of mannequin head, with his whole face, ears, even his hair, using one of these expressions that he’s so famous for, all from a photo of him.
