Digital Maquette: Butterfly
In this video, I explore a new pose using the DemoMaquette_Male model.
I begin with the vague idea of some sort of Don Quixote. The general idea, though, is of a man staring off into the void in search of something.
Along the way, however, I find that I really like the pose when his hands have the palms facing upwards. So, now, I begin to ad lib the pose and work with each individual section.
I spend alot of time tweaking the legs, the hips and the chest as I learn more about the pose. I find that sketching in a pose like this really helps me learn more and more about the structure of our bodies.
For example, when posing the arms and trying out the pose, myself, I find that the left arm is more stretched than I was making it. I often spend as much time in front of a mirror trying out the pose as I spend making it in ZBrush.
I should probably mention here that these lessons are as much learning for me as they are teaching. I spend a lot of time with anatomy and kinesiology books to understand the motion of your body.
I also spend a lot of time on an unlikely source of reference, YouTube. Check out my collection of motion reference here.

Love this blog! Keep it up, Ryan!
It would be so nice if you could create some tutorials about sculpting cloths. Like pants, shirts..Really like the techniques you showed on hairs. Super nice!
